The Society Operations

YES Society operations are guided by the YES Society Handbook. Once the 45 YES Members (students) have been selected, under the chairpersonship of their YES Advisor (teacher), they meet, discuss and adopt their Society's constitution (guidelines provided).

When the constitution is agreed, all YES Members are formally inducted as bona-fide members.

Members then set about canvassing for votes and hold an election for the several leadership positions within the Society. Separating into the following groupings, Members then duplicate the Society leadership positions and elect their Team committees:

15 x Grade 9 (Standard 7) - YES Pioneers
15 x Grade 10 (Standard 8) - YES Champions
15 x Grade 11 (Standard 9) - YES Entrepreneurs

Each YES Society is allocated 3 to 6 specially trained YES Advisors who help facilitate proceedings.

YES Members meet twice a week after school, with one meeting involving the entire Society and the other in their separated Teams. Chaired by the YES Society President, Society meetings focus on the Society's "business" and provide a platform to (amongst others):

+ Enable YES Members to gain experience and skills in formal meeting participation as well as to develop leadership skills.
+ Set, monitor and debate the Society's budget.
+ Discuss and vote on specific Society projects, eg:
- YES Society marketing - Fund-raising functions / events
- Society newsletter
- Plan and execute community projects
- Competitive Conference planning

+ Form and hear reports from temporary committees. The weekly Team meetings are led by the Activity Leader (rotating amongst YES Members) and focus on guiding and assisting other YES Members in acquiring and developing hands-on skills through action learning in these 17 YES business competencies:

+ Life Skill
+ Understanding the market economy
+ Business Ideas
+ Evaluating the community
+ Goal setting
+ Market research
+ Business planning
+ Business finance planning
+ Human resources planning
+ Business promotion
+ Selling the product
+ Business accounts
+ Business records
+ Leading and managing
+ Business communications
+ Entrepreneurship as a career option
+ Our Business (practical application)

Throughout the year all YES Members work on various activities and projects with the view of obtaining pass gradings in each of those 17 YES business competencies.

Teams present their work to panels of growth agents, comprised of local business-people and their YES Advisor (secretary), who rate and grade them against set criteria on the different competencies.

All such Team Presentations end with the panel of growth agents explaining the ratings and pointing out specific individual weaknesses and strengths to help aid the students' growth.

The YES Advisor acts as secretary at these Team presentations and afterwards is responsible for delivering the assessment panel's gradings to the local YES Programme Assistant for recording and the issue of any Competency Credit stickers.

The YES Advisor attaches these stickers to the appropriate spaces on the YES Members' Competency Certificates, which are then ceremoneously presented to those successful students.
